Made in 1966, Dutchman is the filmed version of Amiri Baraka’s controversial one-act stageplay. It won the Obie Award for best off-Broadway play, thrusting Baraka into the limelight. It stars Al Freeman Jr. & Shirley Knight.

She immediately caught my eye—a black woman in a tux. The year was 1920-something. The Clam House was on 133rd Street between Lenox and Seventh avenues. Gladys was writing and singing obscene versions of popular songs there.”
